Olympiad preparation for Class 6–8: books, coaching, test series or an app?
Updated on
There is no single best option. Most children do well with one source of daily practice on top of the teaching they already get at school. Books suit a child who likes paper, coaching suits a child who needs concepts taught by a person, test series suit the final weeks, and an app suits daily practice with instant feedback. OlympAI’s free plan covers daily practice at no cost.
How the options compare
| Option | Cost per month | Practice volume | Feedback when stuck | Exam-format mocks | Parent visibility | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Olympiad books | A one-off purchase per book | Fixed by the book; once finished, a child starts remembering answers | The answer key, and worked solutions in some books | Some books include sample papers | Only by checking the book yourself | Children who concentrate best on paper, and a second source of questions |
| Coaching classes | A monthly or term fee set by the centre | Set by the batch and its homework | A teacher, at the next class | Many run their own tests | Through the teacher and test results | Children who need concepts taught again by a person, or a fixed weekly routine |
| Online test series | A fee per series or per year, which varies | A set number of full-length tests | Solutions after each test | Yes — full papers are what they are for | Scores per test, often with a rank among test-takers | The last few weeks, to practise full papers under time pressure |
| General AI chatbots | Free tiers available; paid plans vary | As many questions as you ask for, none of them checked | Explains on request; study modes ask guiding questions first | Not in a real olympiad format | No chapter-by-chapter record a parent can open | Explaining a concept a child is curious about |
| OlympAI | ₹0 free forever; OlympAI PRO ₹99 a month or ₹249 a quarter | Up to 150 questions a day free; 5 quizzes a day per subject on PRO | An explanation after every answer, and an AI tutor that starts with a hint | Free sample papers with a clock on screen; timed mode and PRO papers on PRO | Parent report: days practised, questions answered, accuracy by subject | Daily practice on a child’s own chapters, at home, any day — not a replacement for being taught |

When something other than an app is the better choice
- Choose coaching if your child is stuck on concepts rather than short of practice. A teacher who can see where a child’s reasoning goes wrong does that better than any app.
- Choose a book if screen time is a worry at home, or your child concentrates better on paper.
- Choose a test series in the final weeks if your school runs no mock tests and you want full papers sat under exam conditions with other children.
- Add OlympAI if the gap is daily practice: up to 150 questions a day on your child’s own chapters, free, with an explanation after every answer.

Questions parents ask
Is coaching necessary for olympiads in Class 6–8?
No, not for most children. Olympiads in Classes 6 to 8 test the school syllabus at a higher level, so a child with a good grip on their NCERT chapters plus regular olympiad-pattern practice can prepare at home. Coaching helps most when a child needs concepts taught again by a person.
Are olympiad books enough for preparation?
They can be for one season, if your child works through the book and checks every wrong answer. The limit is that a book’s questions are fixed: once it is done, a child starts remembering answers. Pair a book with a source of fresh questions for the last few weeks.
What does a month of olympiad preparation cost?
It can cost nothing: OlympAI’s free plan gives up to 150 practice questions a day with no time limit. Books are a one-off purchase, and coaching and test series charge fees that vary by provider. OlympAI PRO is ₹99 a month with no autopay, if your child wants timed, exam-like practice.
Can an AI chatbot replace olympiad practice?
Not on its own. ChatGPT and Gemini explain concepts well and both have study modes, but the questions they write are not checked, they do not follow the olympiad pattern for your child’s chapters, and they keep no accuracy record a parent can see. Use them to understand a concept, and practise elsewhere.
Which option is best for daily practice at home?
An app, or a book if your child prefers paper. On OlympAI’s free plan your child can take 3 quizzes a day of 10 questions in each subject, on their own NCERT chapters, with an explanation after every answer and an AI tutor that starts with a hint. It is free and has no time limit.

The olympiad registrations closing soonest
Read off each body's own website, and the bodies we could check were last checked 22 October 2026. Most of these register through the school, so the date that actually binds you is your coordinator's — and it is earlier than the one below.
- 24 Oct 2026Depends on your school’s chosen date
SOF IHO (Hindi) — if your school picks 23 November 2026
If your school picks 23 November 2026, registrations must reach SOF by 24 October 2026.
SOF publishes a rule, not a deadline: "Schools may send registrations by 30 days before the chosen date of each exam." So this date only exists once your school has chosen a sitting — and SOF states that change of date is not permitted once it has.
- 27 Oct 2026Depends on your school’s chosen date
SOF IMO (Maths) — if your school picks 26 November 2026
If your school picks 26 November 2026, registrations must reach SOF by 27 October 2026.
SOF publishes a rule, not a deadline: "Schools may send registrations by 30 days before the chosen date of each exam." So this date only exists once your school has chosen a sitting — and SOF states that change of date is not permitted once it has.
