The registration deadline has passed — can my child still sit an olympiad?

Every year, in the first week of September, the same message goes round the parent groups. Somebody’s child was not entered. The form went out in July, or it went to a class group they are not in, or the school runs two of the papers and not the one they had in mind — and they have just found out, three days after the date on every countdown.

If that is you, or you are looking at 31 August wondering whether it is the last date of the season, the useful thing to know is this: the date on the countdown is one body’s date, or one date of one paper. It is almost never the season’s.

I taught in schools before I started building OlympAI, and the honest reason this confusion happens is that we — everyone writing about olympiads, us included — run countdowns to single dates. Run enough of them and a parent reading three of our thirty messages comes away with one impression: that the olympiad season had a deadline and it has gone. That impression is false. Here is what is actually true, body by body, with each body’s own published dates.

Which olympiad registration deadlines have actually passed?

Three registration routes were due to close on 31 August 2026. Only one of them did. SOF closed one date of one paper — the 30 September English sitting — which leaves twelve of its thirteen sittings in our five subjects still ahead. SilverZone and Indian Talent Olympiad both moved their dates instead, and both moved them later.

The SOF row is the one that matters most, because SOF is the body most families mean when they say “the olympiad”. It is also the only row where 31 August meant what it said — which is worth holding on to when you next see a countdown to somebody else’s date.

Did SOF’s deadline pass?

One of SOF’s thirteen sittings in our five subjects was on the 31 August clock. The other twelve were never on it. SOF publishes no deadline table at all — registration reaches SOF 30 days before whichever date the school picks, so there are as many cutoffs as there are sittings.

That rule is the whole answer, and it is worth reading twice, because it means a SOF “deadline” is never a single date. It is a subtraction someone does after the school chooses.

English is the row to read twice, because it is the one that started this: SOF runs a third IEO sitting on 30 September, and 30 days before it is 31 August — so that one sitting, and only that one, was on the 31 August clock. English is the only one of our five subjects that had anything on it at all, and even English keeps the two dates above after it: 27 September if the school picks 27 October, 18 October if it picks 17 November.

My child’s school did not enter them. Is that fixable?

Sometimes, and the first move is the same either way: ask the coordinator which papers and which dates the school has chosen. For SOF and SilverZone there is no parent sign-up at all, so the school’s answer is the only place the truth lives.

Two things worth knowing before you ask.

The school’s own date is earlier than the body’s, and nobody publishes it. Somebody in that building has to collect names, match them to subjects, take the fees and send one list. Anything that needs thirty families to respond takes a week of chasing. So the school’s internal cut-off sits somewhere before the body’s, and I have never seen one published anywhere a parent could find it.

And one constraint that catches people out at Indian Talent Olympiad: a school chooses one slot per subject, and once it is finalised it cannot be changed. So if your school entered maths in Set A, Set B is not a second attempt at maths for that school. Sets B and C are open to the subjects and the schools that are not already in.

Which olympiads can a parent register for without the school?

Four bodies take a registration directly from a family: CREST, Indian Talent Olympiad’s individual online route, Unified Council’s online papers, and Humming Bird. None of them requires a school, a coordinator, or a decision anyone else has made.

No single one of those four covers all five subjects, and the two widest cover a different four each. That sounds like a technicality and it is the most useful sentence in this post:

• Hindi has exactly one direct route: Humming Bird. CREST runs no Hindi paper. Unified Council’s direct papers are Maths, English and NSTSE. Indian Talent Olympiad’s online route runs six papers and its Hindi paper is not one of them.
• Social Studies has exactly one direct route: Indian Talent Olympiad’s online route. Humming Bird runs no social studies paper at all, and neither does CREST.

So the two subjects with the fewest doors have one each, and they are different bodies. If your child’s subject is Hindi or Social Science, that is the single fact to take away from this page.

So what can my child still sit, subject by subject?

Every one of our five subjects still has at least one route open after 31 August, and every one of them has a route that does not need the school at all. This is the table to check against your own situation.

What should I actually do this week?

Send one message to the school coordinator, and give the answer a week to arrive. The question that gets a useful reply is not “did we miss it” — it is “which papers has my child been entered for, and on which dates?”

If the answer is yes, you are done, and you can stop reading deadline posts. If the answer is no, you now have a list above with a date on every row, and the earliest of those dates is 23 September — SOF’s cutoff for a 23 October maths sitting, and only if that is the sitting your school picked.

And if the answer is that your school runs none of this, the four direct routes are the whole answer. CREST has published no closing date at all, and Indian Talent Olympiad’s individual online route runs to 30 October.

There is a third answer, which is that you decide to sit this year out. That is a real option and I would not think less of it. A missed form says nothing about whether a child was ready.
